The Avengers are on their way to Disneyland. We’ve known for a while that Disney was bringing Marvel’s top heroes to Disney California Adventure, but until tonight we didn’t know what the new area would be called. Tonight the company revealed that all of the Marvel rides at the park, including the already open Guardians of the Galaxy: Mission Breakout, will be a part of Avengers Campus. The new area is being built on top of the former A Bug’s Land, right in the heart of California Adventure, and will be open—well, we don’t know when.
Perhaps we’ll get that info later this weekend? The D23 Expo, Disney’s biennial fan convention, starts tomorrow in Anaheim, and more information on Avengers Campus will be revealed there—including, hopefully, what the new rides will look like. There are strong rumors that the new area at California Adventure will feature a Spider-Man ride, a Doctor Strange stage show, and a roller coaster themed to the Avengers, so perhaps those will be confirmed—or shot down—this weekend.
According to a post at the official D23 Expo website, Avengers Campus will also be the name of the Marvel areas at Disneyland Paris and Hong Kong Disneyland. Not only will they share a name, but apparently they’ll all be “part of an interconnected, global story” about the Avengers looking for new recruits throughout the world. One of the rides is already open in Hong Kong—Ant-Man and The Wasp: Nano Battle! replaced that park’s version of Buzz Lightyear Astro Blasters earlier this year. Paris’s version of Avengers Campus will be at Walt Disney Studios Park, a park that, frankly, needs a lot of work; its Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster with Aerosmith will soon be reworked with an Iron Man theme that’s scheduled to open in 2021.
If you’re thinking the name “Avengers Campus” sounds familiar—or like some kind of mobile game—you might be thinking about Avengers Academy, the 2016 game for iOS and Android devices about college-aged Avengers trying to balance their social and academic lives with saving the world. Uh, don’t expect this massive and very expensive theme park expansion to be based on that thing. It just has a similar name.
You can expect the D23 Expo site and the Disney Parks blog to share any news that might be announced at D23 this week—and you can expect Paste to recap all of it, too.
