Watch Japanese Breakfast Cover Wilco Live in Chicago

Japanese Breakfast covered a Wilco classic during their Friday afternoon set at Lollapalooza in Chicago.

With her delicate soprano vocals and soft strumming, lead singer Michelle Zauner brought the beloved track “Jesus, Etc.” from Chicago’s classic alternative-rock scene back to its hometown.

Originally from The Windy City, Wilco released “Jesus, Etc.” as part of their sixth album, Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, in 2002.

Zauner’s cover transformed the iconic alt-rock song into a dreamy, dazzling version all her own. Later that same night on Aug. 2, Japanese Breakfast covered the track again at a Lincoln Hall show.

Before both performances, the indie-rock band’s account teased the upcoming cover on social media. With a photo of guitar tabs, Zauner wrote, “Can you guess what new cover we are playing in Chicago today?” before taking on the Wilco gem.

“Jesus, Etc” isn’t the first epic cover by Japanese Breakfast in recent months. She also covered “Head Over Heels” by Tears For Fears, “Dreams” by The Cranberries and “Popular” by Nada Surf, among others, within the last year.

Japanese Breakfast also released the synth-backed dance track “Essentially” in April, their first new music since 2017’s Soft Sounds from Another Planet.
