Black Sabbath’s second album Paranoid was one of the most important albums in the history of heavy metal and hard rock music. Featuring doomy, stomping hits like “War Pigs” and “Iron Man,” Paranoid is an essential member of the classic rock canon. The LP was released on this day in 1970 and will celebrate its 50th anniversary next year.
Led by Ozzy Osbourne, aka “The Prince of Darkness,” Black Sabbath taped a television performance in Bremen, Germany a few months before Paranoid was released and a few months after their self-titled debut came out. The set was taped in front of a small audience, and it only contained four songs—two of which were brand new at the time, “Paranoid” and “Iron Man.”
