Kate Teague Shares “Sweetheart,” New Single from Forthcoming Debut EP

Kate Teague has shared “Sweetheart,” the latest impassioned single from her debut self-titled EP, which is due out Sept. 20 on Muscle Beach Records. On the track, Teague makes her cutthroat message clear through her dreamy vocal delivery that she’s under the emotional jurisdiction of no one—and intends to keep it that way.

“Sweetheart” emits a wonderful discord between the uncompromising stance Teague takes against being patronized and the blissful dream-pop that floats along behind her. She’s described the song as “a reflection on work experiences I’ve had with men,” and her voice, while alluring, is flared with an agitation that’s revealed with the mantra of “I can frown if I want to” in the song’s chorus.

Teague’s first EP has been anticipated since the 2018 release of her lead single, “Low Life,” followed by a consistent roll-out of other singles from the record. These tracks of hers follow suit with “Sweetheart” as they attempt to bridge the gap between whimsicality and sincere lyrical themes of self-empowerment.

“This debut EP is very bittersweet for me,” says Teague. “It seems appropriate that it’s coming out when it is, because I think it sums up the last four years in Oxford post-college, and that chapter is coming to a close for me now.”

The Mississippi singer-songwriter has performed with some of indie rock’s most beloved voices including Lucy Dacus, Haley Heynderickx and Hovvdy, and will take the road again for a brief Southern U.S. tour next week.
