Michael B. Jordan’s gen:LOCK Renewed for Season Two at HBO Max

Acclaimed mecha animated series gen:LOCK, starring and executive produced by Emmy nominee Michael B. Jordan, has been picked up for a second season at HBO Max, the surging streamer announced on Thursday afternoon.

There’s no word yet on when the half-hour Rooster Teeth production’s next set of episodes will premiere (or how many there will be), but when they do, it will be on HBO Max, only becoming available for Rooster Teeth FIRST members to stream after 90 days. gen:LOCK’s eight-episode first season premiered on Rooster Teeth’s streaming service in January before making its way to Adult Swim’s Toonami over the summer.

For the uninitiated, gen:LOCK’s official synopsis sets the stage thusly: “Fifty years in the future, gen:LOCK tells the story of an oppressive authoritarian force that threatens to conquer the world. A daring team is recruited to pilot a new form of devastating mecha, but they must be willing to sacrifice everything to save the world.”

Jordan (Black Panther) will return to voice Julian Chase, our mecha pilot hero. Dakota Fanning (The Alienist), Maisie Williams (Game of Thrones), Golshifteh Farahani (Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales), and David Tennant (Jessica Jones) will join Jordan in reprising their roles for Season Two.

“We are proud to bring gen:LOCK’s bold vision, inventive style, and extraordinary cast to HBO Max, and to build on the success that our partners at Rooster Teeth and Outlier Society have crafted so skillfully,” said Billy Wee, senior vice president original animation at HBO Max, in a statement.

“We’re beyond excited to be producing a second season of gen:LOCK for HBO Max,” added Matt Hullum, co-founder and Chief Content Officer at Rooster Teeth. “Billy Wee and the team at HBO Max have been incredibly supportive in the development process, and we’re thrilled to be working closely with them on this project. We were blown away by the response to the first season of this show, both by the Rooster Teeth community and the Adult Swim audience, and cannot wait to bring it to more fans of action, sci-fi, and mecha animation.”

Jordan executive produces gen:LOCK alongside Alana Mayo under their Outlier Society banner, as do Hullum and Ryan P. Hall for Rooster Teeth.

The series will find itself in impressive company at HBO Max: The streamer is bringing back The Boondocks and Adventure Time, and struck a historic deal to acquire the complete Studio Ghibli catalog. If there’s one thing HBO Max won’t lack, it’s quality animated titles.
