Anthony Mackie and Samuel L. Jackson Take it to the Man in First Trailer for Apple TV+’s The Banker

This Monday morning brings us our first preview of one of Apple TV+’s debut original movies. The Banker, based on a true story, and starring Anthony Mackie and Samuel L. Jackson, tells the story of revolutionary businessmen Bernard Garrett (Mackie) and Joe Morris (Jackson). The two devise an audacious and risky plan to take on the racially oppressive establishment of the 1960s by helping other African-Americans pursue the American dream. Along with Garrett’s wife Eunice (Nia Long), they train a working-class white man, Matt Steiner (Nicholas Hoult), to pose as the rich and privileged face of their burgeoning real estate and banking empire—while Garrett and Morris pose as a janitor and a chauffeur. Their success ultimately draws the attention of the federal government, which threatens everything the four have built.

Director George Nolfi (The Adjustment Bureau) is telling what sounds like a captivating tale, and the trailer is no different. Marvel co-stars Mackie and Jackson share lighthearted banter without losing the seriousness and authenticity of the racial intolerance faced by African Americans in the ‘60s. Written by Niceole Levy, Nolfi, David Lewis Smith and Stan Younger, The Banker is produced by Brad Feinstein of Romulus Entertainment, along with producers Nolfi, Nnamdi Asomugha, Jonathan Baker, David Lewis Smith and Mackie. Executive producers are Joseph F. Ingrassia, Jackson, Will Greenfield, David Gendron and Ali Jazayeri.

Nature documentary The Elephant Queen debuted on Apple TV+ upon the service’s Nov. 1 launch. Other original films on the way include Minhal Baig’s Hala (release date TBA) and a Will Ferrell/Ryan Reynolds reimagining of A Christmas Carol, as well as Apple’s co-productions with A24, including Sofia Coppola’s On the Rocks, which reunites the Lost in Translation filmmaker with Bill Murray, and an adaptation of YA novel The Sky Is Everywhere.

The Banker opens in theaters on Dec. 6 before debuting on Apple TV+ in January 2020. Watch the trailer below.
