The Dolly Parton's Heartstrings Trailer Teases the Stories Behind the Songs

Netflix announced last summer that they were working on a new series based on the songs of country legend and actual angel Dolly Parton. Tuesday, the streaming giant shared a trailer for Dolly Parton’s Heartstrings ahead of its Nov. 22 release. The anthology series is made up of eight hourlong episodes, each of which features a different director and cast of actors in a story centered around one of Parton’s iconic tunes: “These Old Bones,” “If I Had Wings,” “JJ Sneed,” “Jolene,” “Cracker Jack,” “Sugar Hill,” “Down From Dover” and “Two Doors Down.”

The trailer reveals that these stories will take us all over the map, both geographically and historically. From the Vietnam War to the Wild West, the courtroom to the dance floor, each episode definitely seems designed to tug at the heartstrings. The series is chock-full of tearjerking romantic and family drama, with Parton as our guide and a bevy of familiar faces (including Kathleen Turner, Ginnifer Goodwin, Julianne Hough and Melissa Leo) playing pining lovers, disapproving parents, sparring siblings and more.

Netflix’s press release claims that Heartstrings tells the “stories, memories and inspirations behind [Parton’s] most beloved songs,” and Parton declares in the trailer that her songs are “stories of [her] life” and “the melody of [her] memories.” Considering that one of the series’ episodes goes all the way back to the 1880s, it’s not immediately clear if or how these stories relate to Parton’s own life. You’ll have to watch Heartstrings to find out more: In addition to appearing in “Jolene,” Parton will provide voiceover and introduce each episode herself.
