Ever since Pearl and the Beard had us smitten at CMJ, we’ve been anxious to get our hands on some new music from the pop-folk trio. So we were pretty excited when we heard the band would be spending some time recording late last year, and even happier that they allowed Paste photographer Jake Salyers into the studio for a day to see the creative process unfold.
Guided by a large board writing in the differing parts of their songs, the band worked their way through various instruments. Jeremy Styles started the afternoon on the bass and then continued with the guitar while Jocelyn Mackenzie took to an array of unusual objects trying out different percussive sounds as Emily Price played piano.
In the middle of the session the band took a break to grab some food and wander around a movie props store, and it wasn’t until far past sunset that they decided to call it a night. Check out Salyers’ photos of a day in the life of Pearl and the Beard.
