When an album is named after a place, it often comes from a particularly strong emotion it might bring out in a songwriter. That’s not exactly the case with Laura Gibson’s La Grande, which instead was inspired by the Oregon town that “people usually pass through on their way to somewhere else, but which contains a certain gravity, a curious energy.”

But that “curious energy” can be heard throughout Gibson’s latest LP, which is set for a Jan. 24 release on Barsuk Records. The album is filled with clacking, country-influenced rhythms as seen on the title track and “The Fire,” acoustic guitar-driven songs and Gibson’s charming, wandering vocal style.

Gibson produced the 10-track LP, which also featured Joey Burns of Calexico, Meric Long and Logan Kroeber of the Dodos and Nate Query and Jenny Conlee of the Decemberists. The album is notably layered for the songwriter, who also played bass, guitar, piano, pump organ, vibraphone, synthesizer, marimba and a marching drum on La Grande.
