In the two years following their highly-praised debut album, D.C.-based Deleted Scenes took some time to tinker around with the songs they were writing on the road—over the course of 300 shows, while traveling in a converted bread van.
Their sophomore effort, Young People’s Church of the Air, has that same do-it-yourself sensibility to it. “English As A Second Language” sounds like something that could have been dreamed up in the back of that bread van. That’s a very good thing, we promise. With a melody catchy enough to be a gum commercial jingle, “English” might fool you into not taking it too seriously on first listen, but underneath all the nifty effects, the lyrics are dark, even profound. On whatever level you choose to take them in, the song’s looping melodies are addictive.
You can stream the song below and look for Young People’s Church of the Air, due out on July 10.
