At age 11, Sera Cahoone was already banging away on the drums. By 12, she was at dive bars, sitting in with old bluesmen and soaking up their talent. It’s been a long time since the dive bars and lessons of her youth, but Cahoone has kept herself busy. In addition to her time with Carissa’s Weird, Cahoone has drummed for Band of Horses, Betsy Olson and Patrick Park. In 2006, she went solo with her debut album, Only as the Day Is Long.
Four years later, Cahoone returns with Deer Creek Canyon—named after her childhood home in Colorado—which features an impressive collection of folk, bluesy sadness and indie-rock songs. On her new single “Naked,” she showcases her ability to imbue even a single song with longing and vulnerability.
“I took a very long break to write this record,” she says of her latest work. “I didn’t care how long it took. Once these songs started coming together, I knew I wanted to take my time with this one. I wanted to get it right, focus more on production, and make sure all the sounds and vocals were pushed even higher.”
Cahoone plans to release Deer Creek Canyon on Sept. 25 via Sub Pop. You can listen to “Naked” below.
