Early last year, Brent Knopf left Menomena, turning the veteran trio of Portland, Ore. rockers into a duo. Remaining members Justin Harris and Danny Seim never even considered disbanding, however, and after finishing a tour to promote 2010’s Mines they began working on Menomena’s next album.
The result is Moms, which will be released Tuesday on Barsuk. It is the most candid and personal Menomena release to date, with several of its songs focusing on Seim and Harris’ relationships with their respective mothers and families.
The impetus to address such subjects arose after Seim came to the realization that he has been alive for just as long without his mother, who died when he was a teenager, as he was with her. He sent some songs to Harris, who responded by writing lyrics of his own that centered on his own mother, who played an especially large role in his upbringing, his father often absent.
Moms will be released tomorrow, but you can stream the entire album a day early right here.
