With upcoming performances tonight and during the month of February, singer-songwriter Margaret Glaspy and her fans have much to look forward to in addition to today’s official digital release of her EP If & When via Story Sound Records.
The New York City-based California native has a musical style that’s been described as smooth and moody.
While not on Glaspy’s newest EP, the Lauryn Hill cover (below) is a tribute to the kind of music that’s shaped her creatively as a musician, songwriter and person. Music from the likes of Feist, Jeff Buckley, Nina Simone and Lauryn Hill.
“Every time I prepare to do that song live, I feel like it sews the audience together into a blanket of purple and grey and everyone (myself included) is transported to the time that they first discovered Lauryn Hill or is faced with the truths of their relationships. It’s an experience that makes me feel like a vessel and as much a part of the audience as the performer, adoring what Lauryn gave us and letting the world know what she gave me,” Glaspy says.
Glaspy’s stripped-down interpretation of the hip-hop legend’s song seems to deepen the somber tone of the lyrics and accentuate the distinctively bluesy quality in Glaspy’s voice.
You can listen to the song below.
The new EP, If & When is available for purchase on iTunes and Amazon.com.
