The inaugural Shaky Knees Festival in Atlanta, Ga., had a lineup that drew us in top to bottom, boasting headliners like Band of Horses and The Lumineers and hosting memorable performances from old favorites like Jim James as well as new loves Shovels & Rope and von Grey.
We at Paste were able to tear ourselves away from the awesomely muddy masses for a few moments to the VIP lounge with our friends at Midnight Moon, capturing intimate performances from festival artists. The stone walls of Atlanta’s Masquerade were the perfect backdrop for our moonshine-saturated escape from the rainy weather outside, and the acoustic vibe of each performance only furthered the laid-back attitude of the small audiences.
One of the first bands we caught we The Black Angels, and it quickly became clear that this low-key set was very different from their usual live performances. The stripped-down setup only highlighted the band’s on-stage skills, and anyone questioning whether their late-night set that evening would be a must-see had their doubts shattered.
