Athens band Drive-By Truckers returns next week with their twelfth full-length album English Oceans, a 13-song composition written by Patterson Hood and Mike Cooley and recorded with longtime producer David Barbe.
“After we came off the road last time, we decided we were going to let it rest for a while,” said Cooley. “So I had time to really focus. I kind of had to re-learn how to write, because I didn’t write as many songs as I’d wanted on the last couple of records.”
All but one of the tracks on English Oceans were recorded during a 13-day recording session in August, and the product of this immersion along with the time to focus on writing is a record that speaks to the band’s past, tweaking their Southern-rock sound to make it cleaner and more refined.
“It’s my favorite thing that we’ve ever done,” said Hood in a recent press release. “I’m proud of our catalog – we always try to make as good a record as we can make. Sometimes things just work. This time, we made kind of a magical record.”
