Cheap Girls has been a busy band recently. Finishing out a tour with Against Me! and set to embark on a round of dates with The Hold Steady this month, the Lansing, Mich. three-piece is set to release their album Famous Graves in May. In anticipation of the release, the band has given us a taste of what’s to come with album track “Man in Question,” which features guest vocals from Craig Finn of The Hold Steady.

“I had the song title for ‘Man in Question’ at least a few weeks before the song was actually written,” said singer and bassist Ian Graham. “I just thought it had a cool late-70s British singer-songwriter sound to the title. Like a Nick Lowe title or something.”

Having a title in mind didn’t limit Graham when it came to the songwriting itself, though.

“Obviously once the song was done, I don’t think it holds too much similarity to that particular style,” said Graham. “But it’s certainly one of the more upbeat songs musically. Lyrically, I think I just wanted a lament of sorts for that uncomfortable middle-period of not knowing whether or not something was going to work out in one’s favor. ”
