Toad the Wet Sprocket 2013 album New Constellation was the band’s first independent release since their debut 25 years ago. Now, the band has returned with their first music video in over a decade—17 years, to be exact—with the visuals to album track “California Wasted.” Directed by Matthew Ward, the video points out the everyday pleasures in an environment that often go unnoticed.
“The concept came from what the song implied: wasting away in California. After nearly 12 years of living throughout California, I moved my family to the Pacific Northwest and realized how much we had been spoiled by the amazing weather, food and scenery in California,” Ward said. “When we pitched the original idea to Toad, it was based around the concept of the band being surrounded by their hometown of Santa Barbara, Calif.— amongst the amazing ocean, foliage, people—but checking out, their heads buried in smartphones, iPods, and newspapers. Basically growing blind to everything worth savoring around them.”
The video vividly brings to life the idea of sunny California.
“Once Toad had agreed on shooting throughout Santa Barbara, I didn’t think there was any better visual to slap the viewer in the face with California beauty than that of liquid sunshine, raining all around, somehow caught on film via slow-motion,” Ward said. “And if you don’t notice that stuff falling all around, California’s certainly wasted on you.”
