The Midnight Special was a groundbreaking late-night variety show that aired on NBC from 1972 to 1981. After the heyday of American Bandstand and before the mania of MTV, The Midnight Special was the go-to destination for rock ‘n’ roll on television. From Aerosmith and Alice Cooper to Fleetwood Mac and Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, the show hosted some of the biggest rock names of all time.
Now, a new collection from StarVista Entertainment and Time Life puts all of these performances in one place. The collector’s edition is an 11-disc set that contains more than 130 live performances with over five hours of bonus features. For the less hardcore fans, a 6-disc set and a single DVD version are also available beginning Sept. 9. You can pre-order the collection here.
In two clips exclusive to Paste below, you can get a taste for just how special The Midnight Special actually was. The first features some memorable performances, while the second is a commentary on the all-too-memorable rock star fashion trends of the ‘70s that made The Midnight Special so iconic.
