When the Paste team first met up with Portland, Oregon singer-songwriter Christian Burghardt in the lobby of the Aloft Cleveland Downtown, his day was just getting started. Chatting over coffee, he told us a little bit about what he’d been up to lately, with stripped-down gigs in Orlando and Dallas bringing him back to his roots after a nationwide run with Phillip Phillips in 2014.
We tagged along with Burghardt as he bounced from the hotel to Lake Erie and back for lunch as he talked about the thrill of life on tour, what he enjoys about acoustic performances, and the writing process behind his current single “Safe Place to Land.” By the time the show started later that evening, we were anxious to hear a live sampling of the tunes we’d talked about all day—and we weren’t alone. Fans of all ages showed up for the show, several staking out their seats hours before the performance began. Some relaxed with their beverages in the back and others packed in close for a front-row seat. It was a memorable evening that Burghardt rounded out with a meet and greet, posing for photos with some of his most enthusiastic supporters.
