Footage has surfaced on YouTube of early R.E.M. playing at Atlanta’s 688 Club in early 1981.
Clocking in at almost 40 minutes, the footage begins with a cover of Buddy Holly’s “Rave On” but continues to include R.E.M. classics such as “Radio Free Europe,” which was the band’s debut single. It was released by short-lived indie label Hib-Tone in July 1981 and again by I.R.S. as the first single off R.E.M.’s debut album Murmur. A full track list is included with time markers in the video’s description.
