No longer the damsel in distress, Princess Zelda is now able to fight to save her kingdom and rescue Link.
To achieve this feat, hobbyist animator Kenna W. was inspired by the recent story of a father reprogramming the original 1981 Donkey Kong so that his daughter could play as Pauline instead of the video game’s traditional male characters.
“I read about that awesome dad who edited Donkey Kong to let his daughter play as the Princess,” Kenna W. posted on her blog. “I wished I had someone who could have done that for me. Then I remembered. I’m an adult now. If he could work it out, I could too.”
With personal animation experience and having a video game programmer boyfriend, Kenna W. set forth to make the change that she had always wanted in the popular video game.
“It feels really good to play as Zelda. I feel like I connect with her character better and it makes me feel like a big damn hero,” Kenna W. explained. “It’s so nice to be swinging around a sword as Zelda.”
