For a while now, the clever folks over at Sires Crown Eyewear have been building buzz around their eco-conscious frames. A basic pair consists of a cotton-fiber and wood pulp composite, which usually gets covered with a thin wood veneer. The result is light, flexible and green, since all the wood is reclaimed or salvaged.
But the real fun started about a year ago when one of the Sires staff was experimenting with new designs. He cut up a vintage comic picture and lacquered it onto a set frames. The response on Facebook was enough that they took their superhero specs on the road and have been exhibiting them at events from comic cons to craft fairs. Each design can be customized to your choosing, whether mainstream heroes or obscure pulps.
Fear not, Purists! No actual comic books are harmed during the making of these glasses. All of the art comes from licensed reproductions (like calendars). “If we were using the actual comic books we’d be disappointing a lot of fans for sure,” said Chris Erven, the optician and co-owner. “People really connect with them.”
