The five best Judy Blume books

Books Lists Judy Blume

It kind of bothers me that Judy Blume books are among the most banned in American libraries. I understand that some parents might not want their nine-year-olds to read about periods and masturbation and sexy dreams, but she tackles controversial issues that many moms and dads are scared to broach, and she does it in an intelligent and approachable way. So loosen up—kids can hear about this stuff from the motherly and funny Judy Blume, or they can hear about it from their idiot friends on the playground. Plus, there’s a book on the list for grownups too.

5. Tales Of A Fourth Grade Nothing (1972)

The first and best of the relatively inoffensive “Fudge” books about two young boys and a turtle.

4. Summer Sisters (1998)

One of Blume’s few novels for adults, a delightful tale of friendship and growing up and lesbian experiences.

3. Blubber (1974)

It’s a lesson in not bullying overweight people—who can say no to that?

2. It’s Not The End Of The World (1972)

A girl who believes marriage turns people into raging assholes learns her lesson.

1. Are You There, God? It’s Me, Margaret. (1970)

A classic, if only because it introduced the phrase “I must, I must, I must increase my bust!”
