A Black Lady Sketch Show Renewed for Season Two on HBO

Aw, yerp: HBO announced Tuesday evening that A Black Lady Sketch Show will return for a second season.

The unprecedented series premiered in early August, garnering universal acclaim and making comedy history as the first-ever sketch show created by, written by, directed by and starring exclusively black women—creator Robin Thede also stars alongside Ashley Nicole Black, Gabrielle Dennis and Quinta Brunson, and Emmy-nominated Insecure creator Issa Rae is an executive producer.

HBO has not yet announced a Season Two episode count—Season One runs six episodes, all directed by Dime Davis.

“It’s been thrilling to see the audience embrace the characters that Robin, Ashley, Gabrielle and Quinta have brought to life,” said executive vice president of HBO Programming Amy Gravitt in a statement. “We had a blast making this groundbreaking sketch show with Robin, Dime and all of the writers and producers, and I can’t wait to see what next season holds.”

In her review of A Black Lady Sketch Show Season One, Paste contributor LaToya Ferguson writes:

Just recently at the summer TCA press tour, Robin Thede made a point to note that there’s a reason the series isn’t called THE Black Lady Sketch Show: While the series certainly captures a great deal about the black woman experience and what it means within a world that both doesn’t understand it and loves to appropriate it (and then continues to not understand it), it’s not saying this show is the definitive black woman experience. Because it’s not, and the particular “black woman experience” changes from scene-to-scene with each sketch’s new perspective.

A Black Lady Sketch Show airs on HBO Friday nights at 11 p.m. ET, with the Season One finale set for next Friday, Sept. 6. You can watch a bunch of full sketches from the show’s first season below and see the complete list of what’s coming to HBO next month here.
