Guess what: the American Dream is a lie. Not Dusty Rhodes—he was real and I love him dearly—but the belief that anybody can be a success in America if they just work hard enough. Capitalism supports the rich and keeps the poor down, and breaking through involves way more than simply working hard. Hell, Dusty himself knew that.
Don’t believe us? Check out this clip from Adam Ruins Everything, which returns to TruTV on Tuesday, August 13, at 10 p.m. ET. Next week’s episode, “Adam Ruins America,” is devoted to puncturing the myths we’ve created about our country, starting with the false believe that the U.S. is somehow a special paradise of unparalleled upward mobility. In this video, Adam Conover cheerfully illustrates how capitalism is skewed towards the rich and perpetuates poverty in a series of short, easy-to-understand vignettes, all with a crestfallen Uncle Sam cosplayer gazing on. If you want to see why our current system of life feels like it’s reaching a breaking point, well, maybe this’ll help you understand.
Other topics Conover will be tackling this season include cops, murder, and Conover himself. He’ll be joined by a slew of guest stars, including Natasha Leggero, Pete Holmes, and SpongeBob himself, Tom Kenny (who we will always primarily associate with Mr. Show, of course). Check it out on TruTV on Tuesday nights at 10 p.m., staring on August 13, and watch that video totally busting up America’s self-image below.
