Will Ferrell, Kristen Wiig and Jimmy Fallon Make a Social Distancing Soap Opera

These are tough times for everybody. We’re all hunkered down at home, trying our best to stay healthy both mentally and physically while the whole world seems to be falling down around us. It’s the greatest collective challenge we’ve faced in decades, during most of our lifetimes. But have you ever stopped to think about the soap operas?

This TV institution has been listing for so long that I’m a little surprised any soap operas still exist. I mean, Guiding Light was cancelled over a decade ago, and that show had been around since before TV was even a thing. There are still four network soap operas, though, and they’ve seen their ratings surge over the last few weeks. They can’t make new episodes, but at least the ones they had in the can (or are rerunning) can hook housebound viewers like they’ve been doing for decades.

What if they did try to make new episodes, though, during this time of social distancing? Jimmy Fallon, Will Ferrell and Kristen Wiig teamed up via video chat to show us all what soap operas would look like if they continued to produce during these shelter-in-place times. Y’know, the way late night shows like Fallon’s have done.

Stay safe, keep social distancing, and watch “The Longest Days of Our Lives” below.
