Christian Comedian John Crist’s Netflix Special Is Put on Hold After Multiple Accusations of Sexual Misbehavior

John Crist might be the most successful comedian you’ve never heard of. If so, he’s also the most successful comedian you’ve never heard of who’s been hit with multiple accusations of sexual harassment and exploitation.

John Crist is a Christian comedian, and he’s massively successful and famous within that world. The Georgia native and son of a pastor has millions of views on YouTube, a popular comedy album, a book deal with Random House’s Christian imprint WaterBrook, and a special that was made for Netflix and scheduled to launch later this month on Thanksgiving Day. He’s also been credibly accused of harassment by multiple women in an article published yesterday by Charisma News. According to the article, Crist made sexual propositions to a woman who believed he was mentoring her, repeatedly sent sexually explicit texts to multiple women, offered to trade tickets to his concerts for sexual favors, and more.

In the wake of the accusations, Crist has cancelled the rest of his 2019 tour dates. And now Netflix, who was revving up the promotional campaign for Crist’s special, is hitting the brakes on that project. Today the streamer told The Wrap that it was putting Crist’s special “on hold,” and would no longer be releasing it on Nov. 28. I Ain’t Prayin’ For That was poised to be Crist’s first stand-up special for an outlet as mainstream as Netflix, and potentially could’ve been his breakthrough from the Christian community into the wider pop cultural consciousness. Instead it’s now in a state of limbo due to Crist’s own self-acknowledged sexual issues; in a statement to Charisma News, Crist wrote, “While I am not guilty of everything I’ve been accused of, I confess to being guilty of this—I have treated relationships with women far too casually, in some cases even recklessly.”

So far there has been no update from Random House on the status of Crist’s upcoming WaterBrook book.
