Watch John Oliver Outline the Nuances of International Trade, Which, It Turns Out, Is not Trump’s “Thing”

For something that’s supposed to be Donald Trump’s specialty, trade sure does seem to have proven an elusive concept for the bloated, rage-tweeting tangerine during his truly unfortunate presidency. John Oliver exposed Trump’s fundamentally weak grasp of “the basic system of barter and exchange” on Sunday’s Last Week Tonight, discussing the subject’s nuances the way our trade-warring commander-in-chief never could.

“Think of trade like sex: If you’re doing it right, it can be good for both partners, though the odds of that happening plummet as soon as Donald Trump gets involved,” Oliver jokes, going on to point out that Trump’s blundering about on the international economic stage has real-world consequences for many Americans. “When it comes to trade, nothing happens in isolation. … There are downstream effects to [Trump’s] tariffs.”

Oliver illustrates several of trade’s key points that are beyond Trump’s laughably simplistic capabilities, from understanding trade deficits to identifying foreign-made products. It’s all pretty grim. “Everyone close your eyes right now, and think of something. That thing you’re thinking of, [Trump] doesn’t know that,” Oliver says. If only POTUS could switch over from Fox News to HBO every once in a while—he might learn something.
