Watch John Oliver Take a Deep Dive Into the Mueller Report on Last Week Tonight

A new episode of Last Week Tonight aired on HBO Sunday night, and John Oliver took the opportunity to address the political elephant in the room: the findings of the 400-plus-page Mueller report submitted to Congress in a redacted state on Thursday.

To discuss what he described as the latest developments in “Stupid Watergate,” Oliver broke the report’s findings into two key parts: the Trump campaign’s incompetence in successfully colluding with the Russians, and the disobedience from those around Trump that prevented him from successfully obstructing justice.

Oliver began by lampooning the Trump team’s shocking incompetence, which included everything from sending emails about political dirt from a hostile country to the wrong email address to mistaking a Russian government official for an Olympic weightlifter. He then went on to describe how several Trump officials, including former campaign manager Corey Lewandowski and former White House counsel Don McGahn, willfully disobeyed the President when asked to interfere with the special counsel’s investigation.

Oliver concluded the segment by acknowledging that the report’s findings and the ensuing fallout from them felt a little anticlimactic, and that we still have a long way to go. However, he did point out that the report is still hugely important for informing both Congress and the voting public as we move closer to 2020. After all, as Oliver says, “The alternative is for America to end up like Michael Cohen: perpetually confused, easily manipulated and never fully understanding how a guy with a full-time job as a press secretary can also be such a max-jacked certifiable meat king.”
