Netflix’s big investment in The Daily Show alum Hasan Minhaj’s weekly comedy talk show—which saw the streamer make a massive initial order of 32 episodes back in spring 2018—is getting bigger. Netflix announced Thursday that the Emmy- and Peabody-winning Patriot Act with Hasan Minhaj will return for seven more weekly episodes starting Sunday, March 29, in an extension of the show’s initial order—its future beyond that has yet to be clarified, but one hopes these seven episodes will serve as a bridge to another, more substantial order.
Patriot Act’s first 32 episodes aired in six-to-seven-episode installments beginning in October 2018, with the last volume concluding on Dec. 22, 2019. It’s been an atypical roll-out for the streaming series, eschewing any kind of season-based structure, but Minhaj and his team’s Last Week Tonight-esque deep dives necessitate a spaced-out release schedule. Paste contributor Graham Techler praised Patriot Act as “Netflix’s best talk show” back in February 2019, accurately identifying it as the streamer’s “sole talk show success story.”
Patriot Act’s 2019 win isn’t Minhaj’s only Peabody: He also took home the award in 2018 for his 2017 Netflix stand-up special Homecoming King, which we ranked among that year’s best comedy specials. Minhaj’s star has only risen since his four-year stint on The Daily Show, where he served as a correspondent under both Jon Stewart and Trevor Noah. It was Noah who wrote a tribute to Minhaj as part of the latter’s inclusion on Time’s 100 most influential people list in 2019, praising Patriot Act as “the manifestation of Hasan’s whip-smart commentary, charisma and sincerity.”
Minhaj co-created and executive produces Patriot Act with showrunner Prashanth Venkataramanujam. Other EPs include Art & Industry’s Michelle Caputo and Shannon Hartman, and Haven Entertainment’s Jennie Church-Cooper.
