Watch Stephen Colbert Press Paul Ryan About the Republican Nomination

Donald Trump won last night’s New York primary by a wide margin, but that alone won’t quell talk of the Republican party holding a brokered or contested convention this summer. If none of the current candidates wins a majority of the primary delegates, delegates can switch their pick after the first round of votes at the convention and go for pretty much anybody else. With the establishment freaking out over both Trump and Ted Cruz, there’s been a lot of talk of a Republican savior riding into the convention on a white horse and rescuing the party from oblivion. One of the names most consistently mentioned as a possible victor of an open convention scenario is Speaker of the House Paul Ryan, the party’s 2012 vice-presidential candidate, and already a top target of the far right-wing and its media complex despite his own extreme conservatism. Last night Ryan appeared on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert for the first time to talk about the possibilities of an open or brokered convention, and to reiterate, once again, that he’s not interested in the nomination. And then reiterate it again, and again, and again, as Colbert, doing his best impersonation of the political media’s single-mindedness and drone-like repetition, kept pressing him on the matter.
