Tracy Morgan to Return to Stand-Up Via Netflix Comedy Special Staying Alive

Netflix is on a roll.

In recent months, the streaming titan has snatched up exclusive stand-up specials from comedy big-shots like Louis C.K., Jerry Seinfeld and Chris Rock, and now, the announcement has been made that Netflix will be featuring Tracy Morgan’s momentous return to stand-up in the form of a comedy special titled Staying Alive.

Shot in New Jersey’s Count Basie Theatre, Staying Alive will observe the comedian sharing his new angle on life, career and mortality in the wake of a near-fatal traffic accident back in 2014. According to the special’s official press release, Morgan will be grappling with subjects ranging from his traumatic brain injury to his physical recuperation, all while wielding the “larger-than-life sense of humor and boisterous delivery” that his many fans have come to love.

Morgan first burst onto the comedy scene in 1996 when he joined Saturday Night Live. Navigating a wide assortment of characters, Morgan quickly became a fan favorite and stayed that way until he left the show in 2003. Not too long afterwards, the comedian went on to star in NBC’s celebrated 30 Rock alongside comedic heavy hitters Tina Fey and Alec Baldwin, eventually nabbing an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series for his role as movie star Tracy Jordan. Following the show’s conclusion, Morgan returned to SNL in 2009 and 2015 as a host, garnering a 2016 Emmy nod for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series for his work in the second year. His latest turn on screen is in Richie Keen’s slapstick comedy Fist Fight, and he’s developing a single-camera comedy series with Jordan Peele. On top of his screen oeuvre, Morgan wrote a 2009 autobiography titled, I Am the New Black.
