The Best Comic Book Covers of July 2017

Summer is the loud, marquee season when comics publishers push marketing budgets and hyperbole across myriad media. It’s when blockbuster events unspool, new creative teams are announced and San Diego invites 130,000 sweaty pop culture revelers into its convention center. The best covers of July reflect that energy; magentas, reds and yellows imploding in kinetic portraits from both mainstream houses and indie bastions alike. Frank Quitely (Jupiter’s Legacy), Tula Lotay (The Hellblazer), Otto Schmidt (Green Arrow), Jim Cheung (Astonishing X-Men), David Mack (American Gods) and a host of colorists all craft illustrations that beg to be approached. Other eye candy from the month includes Mikel Janin’s sophomore chapter of Tom King’s new Batman arc, Leif Jones’ atmospheric (and visceral) variant for Britannia: We Who Are About To Die and a rare Mike Mignola variant for the opening chapter of B.P.R.D.: The Devil You Know.
