I have a confession to make: narrowing down the best covers of the month is hard. Comic shelves are absolutely packed with new and notable releases these days, and a perfectly executed cover is one of the best sales tools in the sequential-art arsenal. From a stack of hundreds—variants included!—it’s my job to sort out the illustrations that leap ahead of the pack, and March’s crop is bursting with varied approaches to catching consumer eyes. Artists like Michael Kaluta, Josh Simmons and Miguel Valderrama play with scale in ways both frightening and awe-inspiring; Chris Samnee leans into classic superhero fisticuffs as he wraps up his Marvel career; Jenny Frison restricts her color use to mythic effect; Russell Dauterman (in fiery partnership with colorist Matthew Wilson) sums up impossible emotions in a single shot; and artists like the masterful Mike Mignola and ab-tastic Kris Anka claim their spot through humor that’s subtle and cackle-inducing, respectively. From the storybook charm of Yoshi Yoshitani to the Vegas lights of Mike Del Mundo, the textbook cleverness of Eleanor Davis to the ‘80s neon-chic of Rich Tommaso, these are the best comic book covers of March 2018.
