As the sun begins its gradual descent beneath the evening hours, some of our favorite September covers are still honoring the warmth and light of a season quickly exiting our continent. Xurxo G. Penalta brings a scorched Moebius-like landscape to the loose 8House anthology, Mike Mignola’s B.P.R.D. cover paints an extreme contrast between Liz Sherman’s fire and the encroaching darkness and Ian Bertram reintroduces a positively serene-looking Cassandra Nova bathed in flame. Ben Hatke (Little Robot), Artyom Trakhanov (Virgil) and Matt Taylor (Wolf) also show some halcyon summer love, though the young girl and her toddler robot will be the ones to actually enjoy it within their narrative.
Conversely, Sean Murphy and Jock cast desaturated portraits of the Dark Knight in Batman Annual #4 and Batman #44, complemented with respective hints of slate grey and a striking red gradient. It’s a much chillier depiction, but let’s be honest: it’s always winter in Batman’s soul.
