D-Vine is Your Own Personal Countertop Sommelier

What if you could have the perfect glass of wine, the second you poured it. That’s the idea behind a new gadget called D-Vine. Created by a french company called 10-Vines, the device works as a sommelier of sorts, and pours everything from a big cabernet to a glass of bubbly at the perfect oxygenation and temperature every time. We had the opportunity to check it out in person at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas earlier this month.

The way it works is pretty simple: rather than bottles of wine, you’ll instead purchase small, 10cl bottles of vino directly from 10-Vines. When you’re ready to drink, you’ll insert one of those smaller bottles, which sort of resembles a test tube, into the top of the device. An RFID sticker on the bottle will tell the machine what kind of wine you’re trying to drink, and then the machine will either heat the wine up or cool it down, and aerate it appropriately while it travels through the device, pouring the perfect glass of wine out from the bottom.

The whole process takes about a minute, and the difference is pretty monumental. Wine especially reacts strongly to the amount of oxygen it’s been exposed to and its temperature. D-Vine ensures that you’re getting the perfect combination of both for that glass. Unlike other solutions that might handle the whole bottle at once, D-Vine is able to be more precise, since it’s pouring that wine by the individual glass.

We had the opportunity to take it for a spin in Vegas, and were really impressed with the difference one minute in the machine can make. Taste-wise, you’re looking at the difference between sipping on a bottle of wine you picked up for $10 at a gas station, and a glass you have paired with a nick steak at a fancy restaurant. It makes a notable difference. An accompanying app also help you decide what to order next, and what to sip on with that amazing dinner you just prepared.

That said, the device isn’t for everyone. You’re limited by the wines you can purchase directly from 10 Vines (which are mostly french), and the device isn’t exactly small. It’s roughly the size of a small mini fridge, so it, along with your wines, are going to take up a significant amount of counter space.

D-Vine is available in France, Belgium, and the UK now for $599 US, with plans to roll out to other countries, including the United States, in the near future. Glasses of wine vary in price depending on type, and can be purchased for between $2-$10 each.
