Great Notion Brewing Co. Announces Second Brewery Location

Portland, OR’s Great Notion Brewing Co. is the latest brewery to announce its expansion, following hot on the heels of Athens, GA’s Creature Comforts, which announced its own expansion plans yesterday. The upstart Northwestern brewery will move into a 20,000 sq. ft facility located at 2488 NW 28th Ave. in Portland, sporting a new 30 bbl brewhouse built by Pinnacle Stainless. The new facility is slated to open late in 2017, “with the primary goal of increasing production and meeting demand in the Portland beer market.”

Great Notion is a brewery that had a very impressive 2016, exploding into the beer geek consciousness with a variety of Northeast-style IPAs, flavored stouts and “culinary-inspired” sours. We named them as one of Paste’s best up-and-coming breweries of 2016, and they made several appearances in our blind style tasting series. Their “Juice Jr.” IPA finished at #38 out of 247 IPAs back in August, while the Double Stack stout just finished at #36 of 102 imperial stouts in our most recent tasting. More information from the press release below:

Great Notion will also be purchasing and operating a five head Cask canning line. Cofounder Paul Reiter says “We’ve been overwhelmed by the demand for our Crowlers at Great Notion, so with the addition of a canning line, we’re excited for the opportunity to sell more beer directly to customers in a high-quality packaged product.” Co-brewer James Dugan adds “This expansion will also provide us the opportunity to significantly build upon our existing barrel program. We plan to greatly expand our sour beer production and create a clean room for bourbon barrel aged beers like Double Stack.”

We’re looking forward to tasting more of their beer at Paste.
