Did you know there’s a National Cucumber Day? Yeah, neither did we.
Hendrick’s gin did, however. The gin is infused with cucumber, and the company is celebrating the big day by kicking off a nationwide tour in a giant cucumber garnisher. Yes, a giant cucumber garnisher.
Described by Hendrick’s Ambassador Mark Stoddard as “an eye-popping, wondrously strange cucumber slicing device,” the slicer on wheels hit the road on June 14th to bring its cucumber cutting skills to the masses.
“The Hendrick’s Grand Garnisher” is powered by a hybrid motor and a bicycle peddled by a “well-dressed gentleman,” so it’s not exactly going to be a high-speed tour. The Garnisher has a top speed of 25mph. The cucumber cutting also isn’t going to be that speedy — it can only handle 18 cucumbers and hour.
“It’s not the most efficient way to garnish a cocktail,” explained Stoddard, “but we do believe it is the most spectacular.”

The Hendrick's Grand Garnisher will commence its maiden voyage from New York City on June 14th, World Cucumber Day," said Stoddard, "driving westward from city to city, pausing in select locations to offer citizens strikingly perfect garnishes, cucumber delights and other oddly refreshing activities.

"This is part of our effort to end misperception of the cucumber as an innocuous salad ingredient," Stoddard says. "As the core infusion that makes our gin unusually exquisite, we feel the cucumber deserves not only respect but wonder."

The 38-foot-long device relies upon an elaborate system of pneumatic tubing, interlocking gears and rotating blades to slice up to 18 cucumbers per hour.

For those who prefer to slice cucumbers unencumbered by a sputtering 4-tonne pedal-assisted vehicle, the ginmaker is also releasing the lovely and quite functional Hendrick's Petite Garnisher, which may be purchased at http://www.cocktailkingdom.com/hendricksgarnisher.
