Tour Cincinnati's Pre-Prohibition Underground Lagering Tunnels

Before the years of modern refrigeration, keeping beer cold was a bit of a… challenge. To help combat the issue, many breweries dug large tunnels underground where they could age beer and keep it cool. While most of those tunnels have since been filled or destroyed, in Cincinnati there are a few the pre-prohibition tunnels still in existence.

During a recent trip to the Queen City, we had the opportunity to check out one of the old tunnels underneath the Kauffman Brewery. Getting into the tunnel required a bit of an awkward (and a little bit treacherous) trip down a small hole and a steep staircase in the bottom of the brewery. Downstairs there were several large tunnels where beer was kept, which were fairly spectacular to look at, and definitely something you have to see. Check them out for yourself in the gallery above.
