Mendocino Talon Extra Select Double IPA

Drink Reviews
Mendocino Talon Extra Select Double IPA

Talon Extra Select Double IPA just might hold the record for the most adjectives in a product name. This hoppy brew comes in 22-ounce bottles because it takes a big label for a name that long.

Or maybe it’s because this many hops won’t fit into a smaller bottle: This beer touts five malts and six different hop strains among its ingredients. As soon as you pop the cap you’ll catch that familiar, slightly skunky aroma that indicates you’re in for a hoppy ride. Pour this double IPA into a pint glass and you’ll add a clean, citrusy smell, too. And be careful with that pour: Talon Extra Select is a heady brew. Pour too quickly and you’ll be staring at a glassful of creamy white foam that takes its sweet time dissipating.

Mouth feel is pleasant: lots of carbonation, good body, not watery but not cloying. Appearance is IPA golden and cloudy with lots of sediment. If you like to floss after a beer, this one is for you.

That’s all fine and good, but how does Talon Extra Select Double IPA taste? Well, delicious, provided you love hops. As a Northern Californian I am required by law to love IPAs, and this is a good one. This is where I’m supposed to tell you to get your talons into a Talon, but you know what? I respect you too much for that sort of word play. Cheers.
