Easter is over, which means it’s time for one of the greatest times of the year: discount Easter candy season.
Whereas last week you’d need to pay top dollar for a peep, Cadbury egg, or a pack of jelly beans, this week you can score the same sweets at a considerable discount. Drugstores and the like are likely to have their easter candy discounted at least 25% today. If you’re willing to hold out on a purchase until the weekend, you can probably score an even deeper savings.
But, what do you do with a bunch of discounted Easter candy? Besides eat it (of course), you can also pair it with a glass of vino for an extra special adults-only dessert. So, what wine goes best with easter candy? San Francisco-based Sommelier and wine educator Brendan Kimball gave us his thoughts on the matter:
According to Kimball, this Cava from Spain is a “surprisingly elegant match with Peeps.” This wine has a fresh, delicate palate making it an ideal pairing. Peeps are one of the lighter Easter candies, so it is no surprise that it pairs with a light-on-the-palate sparkling wine.
Kimball paired this Vermentino with jelly beans. The palate reveals a silky texture with mouth-watering notes of green apple, citrus and stone fruit making it a “lovely companion to jelly beans.”
One of the most popular Easter candies has met its match. Reese’s Peanut Butter Eggs are “a tremendous combination with Reese’s eggs,” according to Kimball. And it just makes sense. This Sherry from Jerez is deep in color and laced with rich nutty, raisin-esque flavors.
If you’re going to grab another Easter favorite – Cadbury Caramel Eggs – pair it with Ciù Ciù Bacchus. This wine is harmoniously delicate and smooth with a little tannin, and that works well with the caramel egg.
