Film Executive Reminds Us That The Call of Duty Cinematic Universe Is a Thing

Though you probably forgot or never heard about it in the first place, Activision Blizzard is still planning an entire film universe based on the Call of Duty franchise.

In an interview with The Guardian, Activision Blizzard Studios executives Stacey Sher and Nick van Dyk made their plans for a Marvel-like cinematic universe clear. Sher explained:

We have plotted out many years … There’ll be a film that feels more like Black Ops, the story behind the story. The Modern Warfare series looks at what it’s like to fight a war with the eyes of the world on you. And then maybe something that is more of a hybrid, where you are looking at private, covert operations, while a public operation is going on.

The company’s film studio, which was founded in 2015, is also eyeing historical conflict-focused TV shows in the style of Marvel’s Netflix programs.

While Sher is a producing veteran of Tarantino films like Pulp Fiction, Django Unchained and The Hateful Eight (as well as many others), Van Dyk is an ex-Disney executive who helped launch the modern Star Wars and MCU films as we know them. So, it made sense for Sher to continue directly referencing Marvel as their filmmaking inspiration:

If you look at Marvel, they started working when you had Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man, and real filmmakers on board as well. What I think made The Avengers so great was the writing and directing. You cared about those characters.

If you just chase the empty blockbuster, and have nothing to say in the genre, forget about it.

Well … that last quote is certainly encouraging. The duo say multiple scripts have already been written for the franchise, and that if all goes as planned, we may even see the first of them next year. In other recent Call of Duty news, rumor is that Activision and Sledgehammer Games are looking to return the FPS series to its roots by heading back to World War II.
