The First Ever Clash Royale World Champion Has Been Crowned

The popular mobile game Clash Royale capped off its first esports season with the Clash Royale Crown Championship in London this weekend. Over 28 million initial players were whittled down to 16 finalists from around the world, and after all the elixir was spilled the grand prize winner was Mexico’s Sergioramos:). He soundly defeated the USA’s MusicMaster three games to one in the best-of-five finals earlier today, pocketing $150000 in the process.

Clash Royale’s esports debut was a success from a production standpoint, but it remains to be seen how relevant the game will be within the esports world. The game itself has millions of players, but Hearthstone aside, mobile games traditionally struggle to catch on among diehard esports fans. If Supercell, the company that made the game and organized the Crown Championship, can get even a small portion of the game’s massive player base to tune in to its esports events, it could be the next major player in the market.

Paste will have more on the Crown Championship later this week. In the meantime you can check out the finals of today’s tournament over at Clash Royale’s Twitch page.
