Grieving Fans Petition Nintendo to Name Zelda Character After Christina Grimmie

Fans have started two petitions asking Nintendo to name a character in the forthcoming Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild after singer and previous Voice contestant Christina Grimmie, who was murdered on June 11 after a concert. Grimmie was an avid Zelda and Nintendo fan, frequently tweeting and even making videos about them. Before her tragic death, Grimmie was actually set to make an appearance with Nintendo at their E3 presence last week.

Both petitions are on Change.org, and one is nearing 60,000 signatures, while the other is just over 17,000.

“Hopefully she is in a better place now, but whether a NPC or mentioned in an Easter egg, it would be a beautiful act to let her be memorialized in the universe she always cherished,” one petition reads.

Nintendo, in a comment to Time, stated: “We are aware of the outpouring of support for [Grimmie], as well as the petition, but we won’t be making any creative or content decisions in this time of mourning.”

Grimmie’s murder was a tragedy. Below, you can still see a video she made from five years ago about what it would be like if pop songs were remixed with Zelda’s famous music. Our thoughts are with her family and fans, and our support is with those in Congress trying to prevent more needless gun violence.
