Souls-like 2D Platformer Salt and Sanctuary Arrives on the Nintendo Switch in Early August

Are you tired of games being compared to Dark Souls yet? If you are, Salt and Sanctuary may have a thing or two to say about that. The dark 2D action game is coming to the Nintendo Switch on Aug. 2, according to developers Ska Studios.

Salt and Sanctuary was released back in March 2016 for several platforms, including the PlayStation 4, PlayStation Vita and PC. It eventually went on to gain more than 800,000 downloads since its release. The game features a hand-drawn 2D art style. Developer Ska Studios took inspiration from the popular Dark Souls series, even going so far as to call the game a “Souls-like platformer.”

When discussing this inspiration, Michelle and James Silva, co-creators at Ska Studios, stated, “The two of us wanted to create a Souls-like game that we wanted to play, and finding that so many others wanted it too warmed our dark little hearts. Bringing Salt and Sanctuary to the Nintendo Switch means more people who like dismal, satisfying games can play our very dismal, satisfying game.”

The game’s narrative allows players to customize how they play. You can choose from several character builds, such as a swordsman, a spellcaster or more. As players progress through the game they will encounter deadly enemies, 12 bosses and can end up with one of several different endings. There are also several other game modes, including New Game +, which invites players to jump right back in and start playing all over again.

In a released statement, Ska Studios describes what kind of story players will encounter:

While sailing across a stormy sea to transport a princess and strike a truce between rival kingdoms, a calamitous encounter with a sinister abomination wrecks the player’s ship. Upon drifting onto the shore, the journey to broker peace dissolves into a struggle for survival on a treacherous island rife with undead.

Salt and Sanctuary will be available digitally on the Nintendo Switch’s eShop for $17.99. The game will come in several languages, including English, French, Italian, German, Spanish, Traditional and Simplified Chinese, Japanese and Korean. A retail version of the game called Salt and Sanctuary: Drowned Tome Edition is planned for release later during the holiday season.
