Preservation Hall w/Tom Waits, Jim James, Buddy Miller & More

I have to admit that I’ve been merely curious about New Orleans’ Preservation Hall collaboration album. I love nearly all the artists the legendary jazz band enlisted for their album out Feb. 16, but this kind of thing doesn’t always work. Then the teaser video below got me as excited as anything else coming out this year (and that’s even without a note from Tom Waits).

Beginning with a clip from Louis Armstrong, the video goes on to prove that Del McCoury, Jason Isbell, The Blind Boys of Alabama, Jim James, Amy LaVere, Pete Seeger, Buddy Miller, Brandi Carlile, Paolo Nutini, Ani DiFranco, Richie Havens, Andrew Bird, Cory Chisel, Dr. John and Steve Earle all sound even better when backed by one of the nation’s finest jazz ensembles.

Now the whole album is streaming at PreservationBenefitAlbum.com, and Tom Waits doing “Tootie Ma Was a Big Fine Thing” is so wonderful, that I’m going to quit typing so I can pick my jaw up off my desk. Mark Feb. 16 on your calendar, and go buy Preservation. Your money will help keep the Hall alive, and it may just be the coolest thing you hear all year.
