Michelle Williams Set to Star in Amazon’s Underground Abortion Drama This Is Jane

Michelle Williams has signed on to star in and produce the drama This Is Jane for Amazon Studios. The film is based on Laura Kaplan’s 1995 nonfiction book The Story of Jane: The Legendary Underground Feminist Abortion Service, per Deadline.

The film is set in the late ‘60s and early ‘70s, in the years leading up to the historic 1973 Supreme Court case Roe v. Wade, which extended a woman’s 14th Amendment right to privacy in her decision to have an abortion. It tells the story of Jane, an underground group of anonymous women who trained themselves to provide over 11,000 illegal abortions for women in the Chicago area. Williams will play the role of Jenny, the organization’s founder.

Previously, Williams has been nominated for four Academy Awards (Brokeback Mountain, Blue Valentine, My Week with Marilyn, Manchester by the Sea). She can currently be seen alongside Amy Schumer in I Feel Pretty, and will star in the forthcoming Tom Hardy and Riz Ahmed film Venom, due out on Oct. 5.

This Is Jane is being written by Dan Loflin and directed by Kimberly Peirce (Carrie, Boys Don’t Cry). Peter Heller and John Leisher will help produce the film.
