New on Amazon Prime Video: All the Movies and TV Coming in January

If Amazon Prime Video is among your preferred streaming film and television options, then boy, have we got a pile of words for you. Said pile, which you have the good fortune to be reading at this very moment, concerns the new additions (and subtractions) planned for Amazon in January, and you’re wise to put it in your eyeballs. We have spoken.

Movies are where the action is on Amazon this January, and if you watch only one feature film next month, make it Midsommar (Jan. 10, 2020), the sophomore effort from Hereditary writer-director Ari Aster. We just named Midsommar one of 2019’s best horror films, and it is indeed horrific, so if you’re looking for family fare, steer clear—something like 1985 adventure flick The Goonies (Jan. 1, 2020), which Amazon is also adding, will be much more to your liking. Otherwise, don’t miss Midsommar, which stars Florence Pugh and Jack Reynor as a troubled young American couple whose trip to a once-in-a-lifetime midsummer festival in a remote Swedish village becomes an increasingly unnerving and viscerally disturbing day-mare. It’s a good month for fans of Pugh, as a matter of fact, who also stars in Stephen Merchant’s Fighting with My Family (Jan. 30, 2020) as an aspiring professional wrestler. And by way of Pugh-less films, we have a plethora of Star Trek pictures—Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979), Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (1982), Star Trek III: The Search for Spock (1984), Star Trek V: The Final Frontier (1989), Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country (1991) and Star Trek: Insurrection (1998)—arriving Jan. 1, 2020, as do Guy Ritchie’s 2009 Sherlock Holmes, Donald Glover-led detective comedy Mystery Team, a trio of 1960s Jerry Lewis comedies in The Bellboy, Cinderfella and The Patsy, and Darren Aronofsky’s Pi. Later in the month, there’s 2011’s Jason Momoa-led Conan the Barbarian (Jan. 6, 2020), Bill Hader/Kristen Wiig dark comedy The Skeleton Twins (Jan. 17, 2020), Amazon’s Viola Davis/Allison Janney family dramedy Troop Zero (Jan. 17, 2020), Jessica Chastain-starring political thriller Miss Sloane and 2019 horror film The Prodigy (Jan. 23, 2020), among others.

All is quieter on the TV front, though there are a handful of titles of which it’s worth taking notice. The centerpiece of Amazon’s January small-screen slate looks to be Ted Bundy: Falling for a Killer (Jan. 31, 2020), a new, five-part docuseries that “reframes infamous serial killer Ted Bundy’s crimes from a female perspective, uncovering the disturbing and profound way in which his pathological hatred of women collided with the culture wars and feminist movement of the 1970s, culminating in what is perhaps the most infamous true crime saga of our time,” per Amazon. Falling for a Killer centers the accounts of Bundy’s longtime girlfriend Elizabeth Kendall and her daughter Molly, as well as those of various survivors and near-miss victims of Bundy’s, some of whom are stepping forward for the very first time to share their stories. For those of you who would rather laugh than gasp, though, it’s a good month to be a stand-up fan: Broad City star and co-creator Ilana Glazer is launching her debut stand-up special, The Planet Is Burning (Jan. 3, 2020), in which she shares her thoughts on homophobes and Nazis, how lousy women’s razors are and how laughable the patriarchy is—joining Glazer in sharing new comedy specials are Jayde Adams (Serious Black Jumper, Jan. 3, 2020), Russell Peters (Deported, Jan. 17, 2020) and Rob Delaney (Jackie, Jan. 17, 2020). And arriving on Amazon at a yet-to-be-determined date in January is the first season of an Amazon original series called The Forgotten Army, which we know nothing about and refuse to Google. It’s the end of the year and we just can’t be bothered to look into this one. Do it yourself if you’re so interested!

If you care to rent new movies through Amazon, 2019’s Black and Blue and Pain and Glory hit the service on Jan. 21, 2020. Prime Video Channels users with the proper subscriptions can catch Spider-Man: Far From Home (Jan. 18, 2020) and Power: Season 6B (Jan. 5, 2020) via Starz, or Star Trek: Picard (Jan. 23, 2020) via CBS All Access. And don’t forget Prime Video Channels’ live offerings, including golf tournament The American Express (Jan. 16, 2020) via PGA Tour Live, the AFC Playoffs (Jan. 4, 2020) and Championships (Jan. 19, 2020) via CBS All Access, and the 62nd Grammy Awards (Jan. 26, 2020) via CBS All Access, among other programming.
