A Killer Gator Terrorizes a Florida Family During a Hurricane in Fraught First Crawl Trailer

The new film from Piranhas 3D and The Hills Have Eyes director Alexandre Aja is Crawl, a horror/disaster-thriller hybrid that pits a Florida man (Barry Pepper of Saving Private Ryan) and his daughter (Kaya Scodelario of the Maze Runner franchise) against one seriously vicious reptile, and during a Category 5 hurricane, no less.

Crawl’s premise is simple: Haley (Scodelario) and her father are trapped in their house, with both the rising water level and a murderous apex predator standing between them and safety. How they got into that particular pickle is less clear: As the film’s synopsis explains (and the trailer shows), Haley ignores evacuation orders to search for her dad after he goes missing, only to find him gravely injured in the crawl space of their family home and then sustain a serious injury of her own (which we’re guessing is why they don’t, you know, leave). Rapidly encroaching floodwaters trap the ailing pair inside the house, along with the monster that’s hunting them—their would-be rescuers soon get well-acquainted with said monster, leaving Haley and her dad on their own in a race against time … and an enormous murder gator. We can’t stress that part enough.

Producers on Crawl include horror legend Sam Raimi (somewhat bizarrely billed as the producer of Don’t Breathe and Evil Dead in the trailer), Craig Flores (300) and Aja. Michael and Shawn Rasmussen penned the thriller’s script.

Crawl swims into theaters July 12. Take a dip with the film’s trailer and poster below.
