The Roles of a Lifetime: Ed Harris

Ed Harris has played plenty of romantic leads, but the roles he’s made indelible build on the tension that begins with his gaze (his eyes are like mirrored aviators). While Harris’s signature blend of brains and badass often involves a gun (think the inscrutable Nazi sniper in Enemy at the Gate), it also made him a natural fit in the cinematic world of 1960s NASA, where the brainy badass was king. See Harris on both ends of Mission Control (as astronaut John Glenn in The Right Stuff and as flight director Gene Kranz in Apollo 13), along with scenes from more than 60 other roles in his 35-year film career, in this retrospective (and slightly future-looking) photo gallery.
